Money Saving Alert!!

If there's anyone out there who racks up as many library fines as I do, Jefferson County Libraries is having their annual Food for Fines.  Basically, for every item you donate, $1 is forgiven up to $10.  This is where stockpiling comes in handy!!!

Food for Fines September 2011

How does it work?

$1.00 in fines will be waived for each food item donated in September for up to $10.00 per library card holder.

When and where can donations be made?

Donations will be accepted at all 39 Jefferson County public libraries circulation desks during September 2011.

What food items are preferred donations?

SUGGESTED donations

  • baby food
  • cereals
  • soup
  • canned juice
  • canned fruit
  • canned vegetables
  • peanut butter
  • crackers
  • rice or pasta
  • pasta sauce
  • dried beans
  • side dishes
  • snack foods

Items which CANNOT be accepted

  • dented cans
  • rusted cans
  • damaged items
  • open packages
  • packages with expired dates
  • homemade food

Public libraries want to do something for their communities and also provide an incentive for library users with overdue fines to return to the library. At this time of year, food pantries are getting low and need to be replenished with the holidays just around the corner. Libraries will be collaborating with the United Way Food Bank, Greater Birmingham Ministries, and Magic City Harvest. Individual libraries also can decide to give their items to a local church or charity of their choice.
